Russell Brand, in his role of Plant Inspector, has contributed skill, enthusiasm and commitment to a range of glaciological research projects since 1977, when as a Mawson wintering expeditioner he participated in the Enderby Land glaciological traverse.

Russell’s major contribution to Antarctic science was his work for the Law Dome deep ice drilling program which was undertaken over 5 summer periods. He initiated a range of features which added greatly to the team’s comfort, safety and efficiency, covering water collection and reticulation, snowdrift clearing, fuel supply and toilet facilities. His skill and dedication were instrumental in the eventual success of the program.
