Howard Burton’s work since 1979 has mainly concerned computer systems onboard ships for the marine science expeditions. During planning for the new vessel Aurora Australis and through its early voyages, Howard played a major role. He was instrumental in the preparation of scientific specifications for the ship and his work on the new data logging system ensured that it was workable.

Howard took part in nearly every marine science voyage between 1980 and 1993, working extremely long hours to improve computer systems. He also provided invaluable advice on other related subjects, including oceanographic equipment. His service over many years to the marine science program was outstanding.
