Graham Mills, during his third Antarctic winter as Plant Inspector, played a significant role in establishing a new year-round route from Davis to the Larsemann Hills, site of Soviet, Chinese and Australian bases. Graham’s contribution in preparing the equipment and participating in the successful attempt — after suffering severe frostbite in the −35°C temperatures of an earlier trial — was vital to the success of the 650 kilometre traverse.
