Denise Allen has been one of the pioneers for the involvement of women in the Antarctic. She has spent three winters in Antarctica as an observer for the Bureau of Meteorology, including two consecutive winters.

As part of the 1988 medical team, she acted as an anaesthetic assistant during an emergency operation, as well as a general nurse and First Aid Officer.

She has carried out a water sampling program for Monash University in the Vestfold Hills Lakes and supported station operations by marking safe routes on the ice plateau, establishing fuel dumps for traverses and providing assistance to many scientific programs.
