David Pottage has served three winters in the Antarctic, 1972 at Casey and 1982 and 1985 at Mawson. He performed his role of Meterological Bureau Officer-in-Charge with dedication and great efficiency whilst conducting himself generally in a manner which was an inspiration to less experienced expeditioners.

In spite of adverse weather conditions and very great difficulties virtually no data was lost for the year, a remarkable achievement.

His skill and experience in Antarctic travel was largely responsible for the successful planning and execution of dog sled and vehicle field trips to both Taylor and Kloa Emperor penguin rookeries required by the biology program.
