Antarctic Art, an exhibition by children, for children, was open from 11 May to 5 June 2009 at Parliament House in Canberra.

The exhibition portrayed Antarctica through the eyes of children from the Melbourne University Early Learning Centre, who investigated Antarctica in a project prompted by International Polar Year. The children and teachers explored Antarctica through asking questions, internet research, hands-on experimentation, poetry, philosophical debates and art.

Casey Station Leader Bob Jones was also involved in the project, answering questions from the children, and providing photos and audio to support the children’s learning.

Their award winning art and narratives capture the essence of the Antarctic spirit, and reflect sophisticated philosophical thinking way beyond their years.

Also featured were works by artists who have journeyed south as part of the Arts Fellowship program and have used their experiences to educate and enthral children. A children’s book by Tanya Patrick and Nick Hutcheson, and two children’s books by Coral Tulloch featured, along with many original illustrations and paintings from the books.
